How do you remove oil stains from a concrete driveway?

Oil stains on concrete need to be treated with a degreaser before pressure washing, not after. We apply a commercial-grade degreaser directly to the stained area and let it dwell long enough to break down the hydrocarbon residue. Once the degreaser has done its job, we clean with a rotary surface cleaner to draw the residue out of the concrete pores. Most oil stains respond well to this approach. Very old or deeply saturated stains may not disappear completely, but they typically lighten significantly. We will give you an honest assessment before we start.

Can pressure washing remove black stains from concrete?

Black staining on concrete is almost always algae, mould, or a combination of both that has worked its way into the surface over time. Pressure washing alone moves surface-level growth around but does not eliminate it at the root. The effective approach is to apply a biodegradable cleaning solution first, let it dwell to break down the biological growth, and then clean with a surface cleaner. This process draws the staining out of the concrete rather than just washing the top layer. In most cases, black algae and mould staining clears completely. Very old or deep staining may require more than one treatment, which we will let you know about upfront. Rust-based black staining from metal contact or certain minerals responds to a different targeted treatment, and we assess each surface before starting to confirm the cause and the right approach.

How do you clean interlocking stone pavers without damaging them?

Accepted Answer

Interlocking pavers need lower pressure than poured concrete and careful attention to the joints. We avoid directing high pressure straight into the joint lines, which can wash out the stabilising sand and loosen the pavers over time. We use a surface cleaner at a reduced pressure setting suitable for the paving material, clean in passes that follow the surface rather than focusing on the joints, and rinse thoroughly. If the joint sand is visibly low after cleaning, we flag that for the property owner because topped-up joint sand is the best protection against future weed and moss growth between the stones.

How often should you pressure wash a driveway?

For most driveways in Ontario, once a year is the right maintenance interval. Driveways in shaded areas, near mature trees, or in high-moisture environments like those near Georgian Bay accumulate algae and organic growth faster and may benefit from cleaning twice a year. In practical terms, spring is the best time to address the salt, sand, and grit that builds up over winter, and fall is a good opportunity to clear organic growth before it freezes into the surface.

What time of year is best for surface cleaning in Ontario?

Spring is the most practical time for surface cleaning in Ontario, and it is when most of our bookings come in. Through winter, driveways and walkways accumulate road salt, sand, freeze-thaw debris, and the beginning of algae growth that takes hold as temperatures rise. Cleaning in spring removes all of that before it has a full season to embed further into the surface. Fall is the second best time, particularly for properties with heavy tree cover. Cleaning before freeze-up prevents organic matter from being pressed into the surface under snow and ice over winter. Summer cleaning works well too, especially for preparing surfaces for sealing or hosting outdoor events. The one period we advise against is when temperatures are near or below freezing, as the water from cleaning can refreeze on the surface, which creates a safety hazard and limits how effectively the cleaning solution can work.

How long does surface cleaning take?

A standard residential driveway typically takes one to two hours. Larger driveways, patios, or combined driveway and walkway jobs take longer. We give you a realistic time estimate when you book based on the total area and condition of the surfaces.

Yes. All cleaning solutions we use are biodegradable and plant-safe. We wet down surrounding vegetation before and after cleaning to dilute any runoff. For properties near the water in Wasaga Beach and along the Georgian Bay shoreline, we take additional care with runoff management on every job.

Yes, and it should be done first. Sealant requires a properly cleaned surface to bond correctly. Applying sealer over contaminated concrete leads to premature peeling and inconsistent protection. We clean to the standard required for sealing and will advise on the appropriate waiting period before the sealant is applied.
